Mentoring the mentors

Mentoring is helping to inspire people to join the construction industry and supporting them through the sometimes challenging pathways into successful employment, but who mentors the mentors?  Building Pathways have recently launched a mentor training programme to introduce vital mentoring skills to new industry volunteers and provide refresher training for more experienced hands.

The inaugural session was planned as a face to face meeting at the Saint Gobain’s Multi Comfort Centre in Great Portland Street, London, but was quickly converted into a fast paced, interactive webinar, when it became apparent that rapidly changing Government guidelines on social distancing would make any face to face interactions impossible.

The virtual training took place on the same date and time as planned and included 10 prospective mentors from Wates, J. Murphy & Sons, John Sisk & Sons, Keltbray, Morgan Sindall and Balfour Beatty (BMBjv). It was conducted by trained development coach, Mike Davis-Marks , and experienced community work manager, Philip Mills, both part of the Building Pathways team.

The outcomes

Feedback from the participants was fulsome and included these positive words from Jamie Parkes, Social Value Manager at Keltbray

“Great to take part in the Building Pathways Mentor training session today which was moved to an online format for obvious reasons. Lots of tips for being an effective mentor, I look forward to putting them into practice when the programme starts.”
